The Spirit's Work of Conviction

Nov 16, 2025    Pastor Chris Eshleman

This powerful message confronts us with an uncomfortable truth: the Holy Spirit's primary work in our lives involves conviction of sin, and that process is meant to hurt. Drawing from John 16 and multiple passages throughout Scripture, we're reminded that Jesus promised the Helper would come not to make us comfortable, but to expose our wrongdoing and lead us to repentance. The message walks us through the physical and emotional toll of unresolved guilt—sleepless nights, psychosomatic illness, exhaustion, and the feeling that our sins are following us everywhere. David's penitential Psalms paint a vivid picture: bones wasting away, tears flooding the bed, strength dried up like summer heat. Yet this isn't divine cruelty—it's divine love. God convicts us because He loves us enough to rescue us from what's destroying us. The path forward isn't self-punishment, compensation through good works, or playing the victim. It's owning our sin, speaking the same truth about it that God does, and embracing the cleansing power of Christ's blood. This is normal Christianity: a cycle of conviction, confession, forgiveness, and transformation that gradually reshapes us over years. We don't move from imperfect to perfect overnight; we experience mountains and valleys as the Spirit patiently trains us, pointing out what's wrong while reminding us we're already forgiven through Jesus.
