The God Who Divides

Feb 8, 2026    Pastor Chris Eshleman

This powerful exploration of God's character reveals Him as the divine divider who establishes clear boundaries between light and darkness, good and evil, holy and common. Beginning with Genesis 1, we discover that separation is woven into the very fabric of creation itself. When God separated light from darkness, waters from waters, and day from night, He wasn't just organizing the physical universe—He was revealing something fundamental about His nature. The Hebrew word 'badal' appears throughout Scripture, showing us that God consistently makes distinctions and calls us to do the same. This theme continues through Leviticus, where priests were commanded to distinguish between clean and unclean, not as arbitrary rules but as spiritual training in discernment. The tragedy of Eden wasn't simply disobedience; it was humanity's attempt to redefine good and evil on our own terms. We wanted to draw the lines ourselves rather than trust God's wisdom. Today, we live in a world where everyone believes they have the right to determine morality, leading to endless confusion and conflict. Yet Jesus simplified our decision-making by presenting binary choices: narrow gate or wide gate, rock or sand, God or mammon. This isn't primitive thinking—it's clarity in a confused world. When we struggle with complex decisions, weighing endless pros and cons, we're experiencing exactly what God intended: the humbling realization that we need His wisdom. True discernment begins with trusting the Lord rather than leaning on our own understanding, acknowledging that only He possesses the perfect knowledge to judge righteously.
